Premier-Rental Purchase Store Opens in Sacramento, CA
“There are not too many positions in the RTO industry that I haven't held,” said Jack Rowland who was managing his first RTO store with monthly sales of $130,000 when he was just 20. He's worked for the big names as well as a variety of mom and pop companies coast to coast over his 25 years in RTO.
Jack knew he needed to “stop working for others and helping them earn lots of money. I wanted to work for myself. I also wanted to eventually retire in Sacramento where my roots are. I checked into different franchises. I knew I didn't want a ‘store in the box'. I didn't want the programs that some of the bigger companies were offering. Through the course of my research, I ran across Trooper. It was early in the franchising game for Premier. We got together and got me open.”
The biggest obstacle for Jack was the financing. For over ten years he had toyed with opening his own non-franchise store. But according to Jack, “trying to open by yourself is tough with banks who like systems in place with existing franchising. It was a giant wall. That is why I looked into franchising in the first place. I went through a lot of bumps but in the end with Trooper's help I developed a business plan that worked.”
What appealed to him about Premier was Trooper himself. “He has a method and vision. He works hand-in-hand with his dealers. Supports them 100%. He found a niche, appealing to experienced operators who want to be individual business owners.”
Just as Premier proved to be the perfect vehicle for Jack's entry into business ownership, Jack helped Premier forge several trails as his needs emerged in such areas as accounting, human resources, leasing.
“Trooper was receptive as needs came up to put systems in place to make it easier for dealers to get in business. I am happy about where Premier has gotten me and happy about where Premier is headed as a company.
“There is a unified look to Premier stores, but otherwise each store is run independently, from what products the dealer wants to his rates to how the store is run. But the support is there on a day-to-day basis as well as in unusual circumstances, like staffing for an emergency. Someone from Premier is ready to get on plane to help a dealer.”
Jack opened his Premier store in 2001 and is not only one of the longest running Premier dealers but has one of highest monthly earnings. He's at home in California and at home in an industry he loves, working hard for himself and his family – and no one else.
“It is a real change to be doing things myself rather than working for someone who tells you what to do.”
